Wellness Check-Ups

Regular wellness checkups are critical to helping your pet live a long, healthy life. Because cats and dogs age an average of seven human years for every calendar year, your pet should have a wellness check-up at least twice each year. These frequent physical exams help us to catch diseases and other physical issues at an early stage so that we can provide the fastest treatment.

During a wellness check, your veterinarian listens to your pet’s heart and lungs, evaluates your pet’s vision, evaluates skin condition, looks for any unusual lumps or swellings, checks your pet’s teeth and oral cavity, and checks your pet’s overall health.
Our wellness services also can include blood work and other lab testing to get objective data on your pet’s health. Blood work is often recommended to establish a baseline against which to compare future data. A wellness check also allows you a chance to talk to your vet about vaccinations, dental health, nutrition, behavior and any other questions you may have about your pet’s health.

Vaccinations

Administering the right vaccinations for your particular pet is crucial to preventing contagious and deadly diseases. There are a growing number of available immunizations on the market, from valuable blended vaccines that prevent multiple diseases to vaccines that contain ingredients that we at Companion Animal Medical Center would not recommend. To develop a vaccination plan, we consider your animal’s age, lifestyle and medical history to identify any risks before recommending appropriate vaccines at the most appropriate stage of the pet’s life with the best products available.

Dental Health

Dental problems cause a lot more than just bad breath in cats and dogs. When food accumulates in the mouth, it breeds bacteria that attack the gums and root of the tooth. Eventually, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and lodge in your pet’s heart, kidneys and lungs, potentially causing organ failure. Simply put, healthy pets have healthy teeth.

According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have oral disease by the age of 3. Dental disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem in pets. Small-breed dogs present with dental and gum disease early in life, while medium- to large-breed dogs usually present with symptoms after 4 years. In cats, dental problems can cause kidney disease, the No. 1 cause of feline death.

Our veterinarians examine your pet’s teeth during every wellness check-up, and recommend ways you can care for your pet at home. In many cases, general anesthesia is required to understand the full scope of dental disease. Once the pet is asleep, we not only diagnose the dental problem, but we also can take immediate action to clean tartar, apply fluoride, extract teeth and take other steps as needed.
